Centre Based Services

Centre Based Services are provided to young people aged 12 to 18 years who may be experiencing a range of complex issues including family conflict, truancy, substance misuse, social isolation and limited social skills. In some circumstances people under the age of 12 and over 18 may be offered services. Services are offered through activities based in Stratton, along with outreach activities provided in Swan View.

Programs and services are developed in collaboration with young people with a focus on addressing individual and group needs. Core funding to run the program is provided by the Department for Child Protection (DCP), which has contributed this funding since 1986. The program has extensive links with a number of other related stakeholders supporting the target group, with various sources of funding being accessed over the years to provide innovative programs and activities.

Activities available during centre based times include:

  • Pool Competitions,
  • Soccer Table
  • Air Hockey Table
  • Music
  • Snacks
  • Computer games
  • Football/other sporting activities
  • Young People who attend the activities provided by the HCSG youth Services have the opportunity to develop supportive relationships with staff, access support and advocacy and to socialize with other young people.

    Outreach program

    The service works in partnership with the Midland PCYC to provide activities to young people living in the Shire of Mundaring. Activities are provided from the PCYC mobile youth space and include Xbox competitions, basket ball, internet access and remote control cars. Please call for further information.

    Intensive Support Service

    The focus of the Intensive Support Service is to provide a one to one support service for young people with complex health and related issues, for example substance misuse, mental illness and accommodation difficulties. Priority will be given to young people who are not receiving support through other services and also young parents.

    The outreach service provides one to one emotional and practical support, advocacy, information and referral.

    The worker may provide assistance to the young people in the following areas:

  • Emotional and social support.
  • Practical assistance on how to access community services such as: Doctors, Hospitals, TAFE, Centrelink, Legal Aid, Emergency Relief, etc.
  • Referrals: the support worker will assist the young person to gain access to other services as required.
  • Advocacy: Working within an empowerment model, the support worker will, wherever possible, work alongside the young person in order to assist him/her to develop the ability to advocate for themselves. However, when necessary the support worker will advocate on the young person’s behalf with other service providers and individuals.
  • Referral criteria

    Young People aged between 15– 21 years (Younger people may be accepted to the program however this will be assessed on a case by case basis) Experiencing more than one of the following issues:

    • Homelessness
    • Pregnant/Parenting
    • Substance Abuse
    • Physical/Sexual Abuse
    • Criminal offending
    • Poor physical/mental health and not accessing health services

    Crisis Accommodation Service

    Kira House provides crisis accommodation for 14-18 year old young women who are leaving a situation of Domestic Violence.

    At Kira House staff work alongside young women to offer support and enable them to develop strategies that enhance their safety.

    Young women staying at Kira house will be offered assistance with:

    • Emotional and social support
    • Living Skills
    • Parenting issues
    • Information and education to increase their knowledge, skills and confidence so they are better informed about family and domestic violence and the options and resources available.
    • Practical assistance and referrals to access other community services;
    • Informal counselling;
    • Advocacy for the young women when necessary;
    • Case management;

    We will focus on the strengths of the young women and work towards achieving their goals.
